Esther Miriam Andreen was born on September 4, 1896 in New Haven, Connecticut to parents Gustav and Marie Andreen. Her father became the fourth president of Augustana College in 1901. Albrecht had two older brothers, Paul and Marion, and two younger, Gustav and Carl. The Alpha Delta Journalistic Fraternity was founded 27 December 1929 by staff members of the Augustana Observer. On 8 March 1930, the Illinois Alpha Chapter began at Augustana College. Alpha Lambda Delta was a national honors society founded at the University of Illinois in 1923. Initially, it was open only to high-achieving women since its brother organization, Phi Eta Sigma, accepted only male participants. Both organizations became co-educational in the mid-1970s.
